After a late night in Malibu any thought of a decent lie in was nipped in the bud with Matt arranging to take us for breakfast early doors. He’d been up since 6am so thought it right that we shouldn’t enjoy any more shut eye than was necessary. Very decent of him. It was dark when we arrived last night and we were quick to go out on the town so this morning was the first chance we’d had to properly take in our surroundings. Great view of the Pacific from our ‘villa’ with pool, a clear blue sky, sun shimmering on the sea, a balmy mid 70s in November, hummingbirds in the garden…I can see the appeal of living in that part of the world. Matt roars up and in we get to be transported in double quick time to Urth Caffe on Main Street, Santa Monica. Super fit Matt was taking this opportunity to let his hair down Beers last night, 1000 calorie muffins for breakfast. I suppose he had been up since the crack of dawn and earned it, I stuck to scrambled eggs. I had hoped we would be breakfasting in some super cool joint in Beverly Hills, bump into some stars, take a few selfies so I was a little crestfallen that we were refuelling here. Matt assured me that celebs frequented the caff all the time and low and behold, in walks Ari Gold’s wife. Nobody batted an eyelid apart from me, I must have been the only person there that watched entourage. It was all I could do to stop myself from going over to introduce myself, getting an autograph and a selfie. Yeah, right. Matt had the rest of the day off and was now taking us to his ‘local’ gun club, a 30 mile drive to the north of L.A. and just south of Santa Clarita. What should have taken an hour only took 40 minutes, turns out the 55mph signs are only advisory. After parking up it’s now that we discover we have a mini arsenal in the boot. I couldn’t tell you what he had exactly but I know there was an AR15 (scary as), another similar nutty rifle/machine gun, a 9mm Glock and another handgun, think it was a Beretta 9mm. I’ve had a go on a .44 Magnum before and thought that was a bit lively but Matt said it didn’t have anything on the .50 caliber he pulled out of the trunk. Was very disappointed when the guys on the counter told us they didn’t have any .50 caliber bullets in stock so we didn’t have chance to embarrass ourselves and get knocked over by the recoil. After flashing our passports and signing a couple of pieces of paper we were let loose. Crazy. You can see why people go to the range a lot over there, it is addictive. Luckily the bullets are expensive or else you’d be spraying them around like paintball, just a bit deadlier. Just as well. After a late afternoon bite to eat we headed back to Pacific Palisades to see Liseth and the kids at Matt’s place before going back to our house, freshening up and heading out again. I took the opportunity to head for the beach and take some shots of the pier all lit up for the night. Once I’d done as much as I could I wandered back via Hotel California and met up with the boys at Del Frisco’s Grille which was just at the end of the pier. After one or two there we then headed north along Ocean Avenue to the Water Grill restaurant for dinner. It seemed like a very nice place, nice decor with a great atmosphere, and if you’re into your seafood I’d thoroughly recommend it. The fellas really enjoyed their meal, I’m just not into seafood as much as they are. Just as well we had burger and fries at 5pm or else all the beer would have gone to my head
