USA road trip, day 12, bonkers town

After the past 11 days and last nights over indulgence, a lay in was just what the doctor ordered. By the time we’d all surfaced it was brunchtime and when we eventually sat down for our first meal of the day it was lunchtime. We had some sort of idea what we wanted to do today, maybe a helicopter trip to the Grand Canyon, or fly on the zip line at Fremont Street, but for now we were very comfortable having some comfort food and drink and watching the world go by. Once the batteries were suitably recharged it was of to Venice. Not that Venice, but the lookey likey one up at the Venetian Hotel. I’ve been lucky enough to visit the real Venice so to see this recreation was fun. The interior of the hotel actually has a canal running through it and if you’re so inclined you can take a gondola ride and be serenaded to. I wasn’t really in a romantic mood so gave it a miss, was amusing to watch others enjoying the experience though. Had a quick go on the slots before meandering back to the Bellagio. Getting anywhere on foot in Vegas takes you twice as long as you think it will. It’s not as simple as just crossing the road there, no, overpasses everywhere. Up a flight of never ending steps, across the bridge, down the steps and repeat. That experience played a part in a later decision. Once back at the hotel I thought I’d check the gym out before we went out for the evening. Very flash it was too. TVs built into the treadmills (which is the norm now I’m told), of which there were at least 50 of them along with all the usual bits of kit. To get anywhere in the hotel you have to pass through the casino. Felt a bit self conscious after my run, heading back to my room through the casino dripping in sweat. Nice. After freshening up our destination tonight was the Treasure Island hotel where the Cirque du Soleil were performing one of their many shows in Vegas, Mystère. We originally wanted to see Absinthe at Caesars Palace but it wasn’t on that Tuesday night. No matter, the show was fantastic. After we left the show I was looking forward to the free pirate show that’s staged outside the hotel on the pirate ships. Nope. Show had been cancelled a few months before by the management to save money. Shame. Greg and Phil shot off to the posh Wynn Hotel to check out the bar whilst I stayed and got some night shots of the Treasure Island exterior and the Palazzo opposite. Shots of some of the other hotels was my mission for the night whilst the boys went off to play. Next hotel exterior for me was the Mirage, then the Venetian, the Flamingo and the Bellagio. It was just coming up to midnight by now and it was the last couple of fountain shows of the night, water ‘rockets’ to music. Can’t rember the music to the first show, was setting up my camera, but the final show of the night was Whitney Houston performing the Star Spangled Banner. Gave me goosebumps, not a lot of things do. From there I carried on down the strip a little to get some shots of Paris and a bit further on to New York. Was about 1:30am now, hardly anybody around, just me with a few grands worth of camera gear being followed by some local youths on BMXs. Time to call it a night. Taxi from the Tropicana, top speed back to my waiting bed. If only. Had to back up some of the photos so lights out wasn’t until 3 for 5 hours kip. Was going to need some coffee in the morning or I’d feel like death warmed up 😉
